Primal Sushi Revisted!

Monday, July 11, 2011

The stats on my blog show that Primal sushi is the most searched and my previous post on Primal sushi http://primaljourney.blogspot.com/2009/03/sushi-low-carb-style.html has the highest hits apart from my before and after shots, I take it that it's something that most people do miss when they embark on a Primal/Paleo or low carb lifestyle.

I know I miss sushi a lot and I do indulge every now and then in the real thing but if you are strict low carb/primal then you will love this.  Sorry i've kept it from you for so long!

This recipe uses cauliflower rice and mayonaise and it's pretty damn good, don't let it sit in the fridge like you do with traditional sushi otherwise it will turn yuck, just make it, leave it 15mins then eat it all up!

Hope you enjoy ;)

Sushi 'low carb style'

Sunday, March 29, 2009

I make some pretty good sushi, obviously in my old higher carb days rice was used, however it seems when we transition to a low carb/primal/paleo lifestyle the one missing more than bread is sushi.  This post is my most searched blog post, it remains to be extremely popular.  I hope this satisfies and gives you a sense of relief that you can enjoy a form of sushi without blowing your good eating plan!

Above are two different versions of low carb sushi, the one on the left is made with egg and the one on the right is made with cauliflower rice and mayo! The perfect lunch!

The photo to the left I used Nori which is the toasted seaweed, you can use raw seaweed but I prefer the toasted one, it's darker in color. Then I fried 2 eggs into a flat omelette, layered with avocado then crab meat mixed with homemade mayo, to the mayo add ginger juice (the juice that comes from grated fresh ginger, discard the ginger meat), lime juice and ofcourse wasabi YUM!!! Then to top it off with Tamari or Kikkoman do a Gluten free Soy Sauce.
I just made it the same as you do with rice, it's a little harder to roll because the rice makes it easier, but as you can see from the photo it came out pretty darn good if you ask me. Even my family who love traditional rice sushi even liked this. After experimenting with cauliflower rice I have decided I prefer the sushi made with cauli rice than the egg, however the egg is still awesome, just personal taste really!
The photo on the right...Cook the cauliflower rice, mix in your mayo, s&p and vinegar. Spread out the cauliflower as you would the rice, lay your smoked salmon atop of the cauli rice, then layer avocado, carrot, zucchini and cream cheese, roll up and then eat immediately or let sit for 15 mins, do not leave this to sit in fridge for longer than an hour, it will be gross!

1 tsp Wine Vinegar
2 Tbsps Japanesse Mayo (any mayo will work)

Americana

Friday, February 27, 2009

So last night we had Americana come to town which is pretty cool for little new Plymouth. I was a bit of a bogan in my teenage years so I love to be amongst the smell of burning rubber and the noise that deafens you for the rest of the night especially with 800 hot rods rolling through our small “city”.
We grabbed some dinner at Sushi Ninja which is my favourite place ever, it’s the only place I can eat out and stay true low carb, everyone says to me but sushi has rice, well yes it does but real Japanese food doesn’t have to. So I had tuna tataki with wasabi mayo, chiku-mayo which is like the yummiest thing on earth, they call it a fish “cake” but is kind of like calamari with heaps of grilled mayo and just to die for, and then my beloved edamame beans which are very satisfying and a great compliment to dinner. So I ate at 6pm and lasted all night till 12 when I started getting seriously hungry but the wow thing for me is just to even last that long without eating, I used to only go 3 hours and be screaming for food, just another wonderful benefit of low carb.
I did weigh myself this morning I can’t help it, but I shouldn’t have because when it reads not so good it does frustrate me. Maybe I’ll take some of the advice Marc from http://www.feelgoodeating.blogspot.com/ gave Beastie girl and to throw out the scale….don’t know if I can actually do that tho.
